LEARN ENGLISH : VERB PATTERN (1-6)



Let's learn English from the basics...the verb pattern 1 to 6
Start with ...

VERB PATTERN 1
Formula : Subject + Verb + Direct Object
Example               : Her name is Entin
                                 I know her name
                                Usman drinks fresh milk

VERB PATTERN 2
Formula : Subject + Verb + (not) to infinitive
Example               : Andri forgot to lock the door
                                Indah hopes to go to Hongkong on holiday
                                Dedeh decided not to sell her cellphone


VERB PATTERN 3
Formula : Subject + Verb (pro)noun + (not) to-infinitive
Example               : Gugun asks his wife not to work
                                Didn’t I tell you not to press any button?
                                The situation forced Isma to cancel her holiday 



VERB PATTERN 4
Formula : Subject + Verb + (pro)noun + (to be) complement
Verb commonly used in this pattern are:
Acknowledge    feel                        judge                    report                   think
Believe              find                       know                     see                      understand
Declare             guess                    prove                    suppose
Deny                 imagine                 realize                  suspect

Example               :  I find it hard to believe
                                She realizes it to have been an error
                                Rahma proved them (to be) wrong




VERB PATTERN 5
Physical Perception

Formula : Subject + Verb + (pro)noun + Infinitive

Verb used in this pattern :
Feel, hear, look at, look up,
Notice, observe, see, watch

Example               : Watch me pose
                               I see him leave
                               Can you hear Yuni shouts?

Non-Physical Perception

Formula : Subject + Verb + (pro) noun + Infinitive

Verb used in this pattern : have, help, let, know, make

Example               : Let me outta here
                                I would have the students do the work
                                Tina has never been known to wear men’s shoes
NOTE : The to-infinitive is needed in the passive construction.

VERB PATTERN 6

Same as Verb Pattern 5, the verbs used in this pattern are also divided into 2 groups

Physical Perceptions

Formula: Subject + Verb + (pro)noun + Present Participle

Example: Anto saw Tika going on a date with her boyfriend
                I could feel your heart beating fast
                We observed the engine revving up to 8,000rpm

Non-Physical Perception

Formula: Subject + Verb + (pro)noun + Present Participle

The chief verb in this pattern are :
Catch                    keep      pass
Find                       leave     set
Imagine                 meet     start

Example: Enjum passed a pretty girl sitting on a chair at a cafe
                They left Karin wondering where the map is
                The police caught the arms dealer doing a transaction
